The Most Common Motorcycle Accidents Bikers Face

For adprincevanced, intermediate or beginning motorcyclists, there’s always a chance of sustaining injuries from a bike crash. Chances of serious injuries are higher in motorcycle crashes than in car crashes because bikers don’t have airbags, seatbelts or a steel frame surrounding them.

Depending on the severity of the accident and how the crash occurred, there are a number of different personal injuries a biker can sustain.

  • Road rash: Since a motorcycle has no feature to safely keep its riders in place, many bikers are launched from their bikes during accidents, causing them to hit and scrape against the ground. Road rash is a skin abrasion bikers get from hitting the pavement, and they can range from mild to severe, or first degree to third degree.
  • Broken bones: The most common motorcycle injury for hospitalized motorcyclists is a broken leg. This is because motorcycles can’t stand upright on their own and accidents happen so quickly that the bike just falls over on the biker’s leg. Wrist and arm fractures are also common because motorcyclists naturally try and prevent themselves from falling.
  • Head injuries: Head injuries and traumatic brain injuries are among the leading causes of death and disability in motorcycle accidents. While wearing a well-fitted helmet can reduce the risk, anytime a motorcyclists gets into an accident there is a possibility of head and/or brain injuries.
  • Whiplash: Since motorcycles are not generally equipped with seats which have backs and head rests, riders are at a significant risk of whiplash in accidents. Whiplash occurs when impact causes the head of a rider to violently snap back and forward, causing stress on bones, nerves and tendons.

It’s quite obvious that a motorcycle crash is one of the most dangerous types of accidents a person can get into. Other potential injuries include spinal cord damage, paralysis and wrongful death.
