The Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Crashes

In case you haven’t noticed the wprincearmer weather and longer days of the past month, it’s motorcycle season. This means that more motorcycles are on the road and will continue to be on the road right on through the summer.

This also means that it’s accident season for motorcyclists. Bikers are much less protected in crashes than people using cars to get around because there are no seatbelts, airbags, doors or any other sort of protection for motorcyclists. Due to this fact, fatal crashes are far more common for motorcyclists than for other motorists.

There are many things riders can do to avoid crashes. Accident prevention starts with making sure you understand the things which can cause an accident:

  • Speeding: There’s no question that the thrill of high speeds on a motorcycle can be quite exhilarating, but it can also be very dangerous. Speeding reduces reaction time and maneuverability for bikers, who need every second possible for protection.
  • Lane splitting: Bikers who weave in and out of traffic without taking up any single lane are considered to be lane splitting. This is inviting accidents for motorcyclists, as many motor vehicle operators are not expecting bikers to zoom by. While it may be annoying to sit in traffic, sitting in the ER because of an avoidable crash is much worse.
  • Loss of control: It’s very easy for bikers to lose control. Wet roads, icy conditions, random potholes and many other road hazards exist for motorcyclists. It’s important for bikers to pay attention and be cautious while driving.
  • Inadequate equipment: While a helmet or padded pants and jackets won’t prevent accidents, they can certainly minimize your injuries and reduce the risk of a fatal accident. Make sure you take every possible step to protect yourself with the proper equipment.

Motorcycle safety, just as with all vehicles, is about paying attention to the road and your surroundings while also exercising caution wherever possible. Don’t fall into the dangerous temptations of relaxing and not taking proper precautions while driving a motorcycle.
